Original Fiction --

New content added to this page: 14 May, 2007 - The World in Play Chapter 5. - (Yes, this is the next chapter. There has not been any update since 2004. )

Lynn has taken off on her own (for fanfic, see below). The World in Play is a novel about Ann Grove and her friends, both old and new. It is presented here in chapters as Lynn finishes them. All portions of The World in Play are copyright (C), 2003, 2004,2007 by Lynn K. Hollander. Fans are encouraged to download and share the chapters published here, but please attribute them properly and include the copyright notice.

The World in Play -- San Francisco and the Bay Area is noted for its scenery, its night-life, its culture and the number of self-proclaimed magicians in residence. Ann Grove's job is cleaning up after them. This doesn't mean that she can't enjoy life in between times, or that those are the only things the Bay Area has to offer. Vampires, for instance -- and other immortals and visitors. Not to mention the mystical significance of the number 41.

Chapter 1 (posted 2/21/03) Full text (~100KB). Linked version (10-20KB each)

Interlude with an Orca (posted 6/24/03) -

Interlude with a Magician (posted 12/19/03)

Chapter 2 (posted 12/19/03) Full text (~120KB). Linked version (10-20KB each).

Martin and the Runaway (posted 9/30/04) Full text (~140 KB) [linked version will be up soon] In which the consequences of Interlude with a Magician come to light, and Fate might be chuckling.

**NEW** The World In Play Chapter 5 - All actions have consequences, whether intended or not. Chasen is hiding from a demon -- dusting. Certain Heros are working hard to understand modern bartending. A vampire bar-owner works at becoming a foster father. And it is shown that burning down bookstores is not a good way to get Ann Grove's attention.

The Door in the Hedge
(Complete story, about 100KB)

This story is primarily based on information available before the start of the Fall 2000 season. As such, it contains information which is no longer accurate according to the series. It also introduces characters which do not, and in all probability will never, appear in the series.

Posted Feb. 23, 2001:

Watcher, Vampire, Slayer, Witch
(Complete story, about 100 KB)

The gang faces a new threat: they're humans. (Well, all but one of them.)
Starring Ann Grove, Buffy, Spike, the gang, several unique automobiles and other people, some of whom you have met before and some of whom you have not.
Set in the current season before the "Council review" episode.
Chapter linked version (12-20KB each)

Concerning Ann Grove(1)
Some fragments involving Ann Grove and her views of the world and of the members of the gang.

(Posted April 16, 2001):

Blood Calls
(Complete story, about 125 KB)

A Mystery. In which Spike, Ann, and the gang have to discover why someone (other than Buffy) is trying to stake Vampires in Sunnydale. And who is it who is out to kill Harmony, or maybe Buffy, and why? (Well -- other than general irritation?) And just what has Harmony been up to?
Set in the Spring, 2001, season hiatus.
Chapter-linked version (6-15KB each).

Concerning Ann Grove(2)
Another fragment involving Ann Grove. Why would Angel ask Ann to make love to him? (Tasteful, PG-13 at worst.)

Posted 19 July, 2001

Intermezzos and an Overture

Four fragments set between Blood Calls and The Chinese Peach. As with the other fragments, mostly concerning Ann and her relationships with the other members of the ensemble. Should be read before The Chinese Peach.

The Chinese Peach
(Complete story, about 105KB)

Buffy is dead, Ann is out of town working on a special wedding (leaving a troop of Alves to watch Tara) and Sunnydale is quiet. There's only the usual horde of vampires, demons, witches, fanatics, and a ship full of dead people in the harbor. To add irritation to the mix, somebody has broken into the Magic Shop and hit Anya on the head. That indignity is followed by a series of intruders, none of whom seem to care much about locks. What's happening? Theft. Who's in charge? Spike. (Well, sort of. Mostly.)
Chapter-linked version (10-18KB each)

Posted 7 February, 2002

Interview with a Troll

A short fragment between actions. Dawn wants to meet Gunn, because Ann knew him in a previous incarnation (his, not hers). This fragment is set during the summer of 2001, between seasons and between The Chinese Peach and The Blue Boy

Posted 22 February, 2002

The Blue Boy
(complete story, about 240KB)

This is a long story. It has 19 chapters of the usual length, and is some 40,000 words long; a standard novella length. It is set after The Chinese Peach and before Roses for the Slayer. A strange child follows Dawn home from school. He's lost, and he's not from around here. It's up to our band of heros to keep him alive and well, because someone wants him dead. Starring Spike, Ann, Dawn, Gang Long, seven yunü, and a major disruption at Willy's.
Chapter-linked version (9-20 KB each)

Posted 10 September, 2002 --New!

The Rubies of August
(complete story, about 160 KB)

Cordelia has a vision, of a ruby and dead people lying all around it, and Drusilla in the background with someone new. Since it is Drusilla, it can only portend the end of the world, but who is the vampire with her? Soon Spike is involved, a counter-raid takes place and Ann Grove offers some advice and help. Starring the "Angel gang" (except Angel), Ann Grove, Spike, Drusilla and a couple of new characters, one of whom has a unique ability. (The action is set in August 2001, just after The Blue Boy.
Chapter-linked version (7-30KB each)

Posted 12 September, 2001

Roses for the Slayer
(complete story, about 100 KB)

Buffy is dead. Spike is grieving (he's not the only one). Ann is back in town. Spike discovers Buffy, apparently, alive but very weak; and that is only the beginning. There are a couple of gods who know who killed Glory, and they aren't happy about it.
(Buffy resurrection scenario -- alternate world.)
Chapter-linked version (7-15 KB each)

Posted 12 September, 2002 -- New!

Au Revoir (November, 2001)
(a short fragment)

Spike comes by Ann's house in response to a call. The first thing he notices is the silence.

These stories are intended for the enjoyment of the author and her readers and acknowledge the deep debt which the author owes to the writers of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel for inventing such a wonderful world to explore.

To All who have liked these stories:

Lynn is leaving the Buffy universe. Ann Grove, Gang Long and certain other characters of her invention are leaving with her. Their new adventures will begin shortly

A prime impetus to this move is that Lynn could no longer reconcile the Spike she was writing with the Spike in the series. In addition certain happenings in the series stories in the Fall 2001 season make it clear that Ann Grove is no longer with the Scooby Gang at that time. We are hoping to make the switch from fan-fiction to pure (copyrightable) fiction. Watch this space for more news (and samples). (And if you somehow got down here without noticing the new content, click here.)

Please give feedback. (It's almost as good as blood.)
